Giovanni Bortolani // Getty Images Different weaving techniques Tapestry beater – A tapestry beater (sometimes known as a weaving fork) looks just like a big fork or comb, and that's basically what it is! It's used to push down your weft threads so that they are secure against the warp - this keeps things looking neat and makes sure that the tension is even. You can make your own weaving shuttle by wrapping your weft thread around a rectangle of scrap cardboard and use a ruler or large wooden dowel as your shed stick. It's normally used in conjunction with another tool called a 'shed stick' that holds open the alternate warp strands so that the shuttle can be passed through it in one motion rather than the zig-zag weaving you'd need to do with a needle. Weaving shuttle – A weaving shuttle is used more on large weaves or where there is a solid block of weft colour being added. Weaving needle – The weaving needle is just like a sewing needle, you attach your (weft) thread to it to give you more control when weaving. They are woven in between (and around) the warp threads. Weft thread – The weft threads are what add patterns and designs to your project. It is strung vertically over your frame and keeps tension on the project so you can add the weft threads. Warp thread – The warp thread is the thread that is the base structure of your weave. Lap looms are the type of loom used most commonly by at home crafters. It gives tension to the warp thread to allow you to weave the weft threads through easily. Weaving loom – A loom is the frame you use to support your project as you work.
